Betcy Walter

Betcy Walter
MA, Licensed Mental Health Counselor

Betcy is a compassionate, engaging, knowledgeable, and present oriented therapist who utilizes research based treatment. She specializes in marriage counseling, trauma treatment for the individual/family, and is a certified trainer of adoption health professionals. A strength based approach, alongside current brain research, is used in providing the foundation for healing in relationships with significant others and children. Overtime, our brains become used to traveling along well known and habitual pathways, leading to repetition of behaviors you may wish to change. Betcy supports the retraining of the brain so that you can use more productive and different routes, and thereby change behaviors and thoughts.

Education and Professional Background

Betcy is a licensed mental health counselor, LMHC, with the Florida Board and a graduate from Yorkville University in Canada, having earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. She completed her undergraduate degree in psychology with a specialization in behavioral neuroscience. She has worked extensively with families, couples, and children with histories of trauma, abuse, and addiction. Betcy spent 3 years working in a high risk program focused on preventing the removal of children from the homes of parents and caregivers, who had undergone trauma. Betcy’s experience includes working with individuals who have survived physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, abandonment, neglect, addictions, adoptions, foster care, children who have undergone trauma, and parents who have difficulty with the behaviors of their children.

Couples Counseling

Betcy loves working with couples. She has advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).  EFT is based on the science of adult attachment and bonding. A substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT now exists. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. This is unequaled in the field of marriage therapy.  EFT is being used with distressed couples, including those with partners that suffer from depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorders, addictions, and chronic physical illness.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Betcy is trained in level 1 Gottman couples therapy. She has completed the training in Treating Affairs and Trauma with the Gottman approach. Betcy has also completed the Gottman approach to Couples and Addiction Recovery.

Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)
Betcy is trained in the TIR protocol for addressing both traumatic singular events and distressing themes within one life.
TIR is a rapid (compared to traditional therapy) method of effectively reducing traumatic stress from emotionally and/or physically painful events in the past. It involves re-experiencing and resolving past traumas in a completely safe environment, free of distractions, judgments, or interpretations.

In the great majority of cases, there can be a permanent and complete elimination of PTSD symptoms following the TIR protocol. By providing a means for completely confronting a painful incident, TIR can and does deliver relief from the negative effects, enabling the person to move on. The resolution of past traumatic incidents can bring about a greatly improved quality of life.

Adoption Competency

Betcy is a certified trainer for the adoption competency class. She conducts this training annually and as requested by agencies and/or institutions. Betcy is available to speak on the topic of trauma and its impact on children within the community. Please call or email for availability.

If you are a parent of an adopted child, you understand that this is a lifelong process. Families often need additional support at various times after placement and after the adoption is legally finalized. Families may need services as a child develops and as normal development, adjustment, and adoption-related issues arise. Betcy recognizes the importance of relational healing and the importance of the family unit in this. She utilizes current brain research, trauma informed, strength based approaches, emotionally focused family therapy, and her experience working with impacted children. Call today to set up an appointment.

Parenting is difficult. We don’t always know what to do and how. When the typical parenting approaches don’t seem to be working, it may be time to try something new. Betcy utilizes current brain research, emotionally focused family therapy for teens, and her experience working with children to help parents that struggle with problematic behavior in one or more of their children. This approach requires a parent’s active involvement in therapy for the child.

Betcy lives in Estero, with her husband Jeremiah, 3 children, their horses, and numerous other rescue animals.
